Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee Wednesday demanded a judicial probe into the “illegal” detention of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her immediate release.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Congress spokesperson Bupenda Meitei said, “Our leader (Priyanka Gandhi Vadra), who has been illegally detained, should be immediately released and a judicial probe headed by a sitting judge should be conducted into the illegal action.”
Priyanka Gandhi was detained at Sitapur when she was on her way to meet the families of the deceased residing in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Further speaking, Bhupenda alleged that the Uttar Pradesh police did not produce an arrest warrant before detaining Priyanka Gandhi, which is a gross crime.
The Congress leader also charged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Lucknow but had deliberately remained stoic silent towards the victim families of Lakhimpur Kheri and wondered whether the silence of BJP governments both under Prime Minister Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi are the true reflection of the highest level of BJP’s arrogance.
Bhupenda alleged that the BJP government, under PM Modi, has been systematically trying to destroy the Land Acquisition Law and making serious attempts to bring the anti-farmers three farm bills.

The spokesperson also questioned why the son of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs was not being arrested till now while Priyanka has been kept illegally for more than 48 hours.

He said that the complete lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh, where fundamental rights have been violated by the state government under the silent spectator of the central government, befits the imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

“Like BJP leaders, even from other states, came to visit Lakhimpur Kheri, but Congress leaders – including Chief Ministers – are not allowed to enter UP or even come out of Lucknow airport, the BJP government in Manipur has not allowed Congress leaders to hold a democratic protest in support of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri,” he added.
