Imphal: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged the Central government to immediately remove the Assam Rifles from Manipur, claiming that “central forces are apparently not performing their duties sincerely as expected.”

The central forces are contributing hugely to bringing peace and normalcy in the state…however, their action which took place a couple of days ago at Sugnu police station by a team of 37 Assam Rifles led by its Commanding Officer, has lost faith in them, Ch Chidananda Singh, state vice president, media in-charge and Ukhrul district,  said in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

“It’s a matter of concern that people might lose trust in other central forces because of the action of the Assam Rifles,” it warned.

Requesting the Prime Minister to review the responsibilities given to the Assam Rifles, Chidananda also suggested “neutral” central or state forces to be deployed in the vulnerable and periphery areas of Manipur valley which is adjoining with the hill ranges in the present chaotic situation instead of the Assam Rifles.

The letter further urged the Prime Minister to take stringent action against Kuki militants who violate the SoO (Suspension of Operation) ground rules.
