Man hit by Meghalaya Home Minister’s escort dies

A police official said the incident occurred at Kera area, on the Songsak road not far from Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills.

Shillong: A 45-year-old biker died, while the pillion rider was critically injured after they were hit by an escort vehicle of Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui’s convoy at Songsak area in East Garo Hills district on Thursday, police said. 

A police official said the incident occurred at Kera area, on the Songsak road not far from Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills. 

Rymbui was proceeding to Williamnagar to review the overall law and order situation in district 
with senior police and district officials. 

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcyclist came from the wrong side and hit the speeding escort of the Home Minister’s vehicle,” Bruno A. Sangma, the district police chief, told 
UNI. 

The dead motorcyclist has been identified as Joakim Marak, while the injured is Marchim M Sangma 

He said the pillion rider who was grievously injured was immediately rushed and has been to Williamnagar Civil Hospital to nurse his injuries, even as the driver of the escort vehicle was 
taken to hospital for medical examination. 

Police have registered a case and investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
