Imphal: M Asnikumar Singh, Chairman Loktak Development Authority, greeted the people of the state on the occasion of World Wetlands Day which falls on February 2.

This year’s theme, “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,” invites us to reflect on the intrinsic connection between healthy wetland ecosystems and the prosperity of communities, he added.

“Wetlands play a pivotal role in supporting human livelihoods, providing sustenance through fisheries, agriculture, and other ecosystem services. Loktak Lake, being the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, is not only a source of pride but also serves as a lifeline for numerous communities, shaping their cultural heritage and well-being. Owing to its numerous importance and relationship to the people of the State, the Lake is often regarded as the Cradle of Manipur Civilization.

Loktak Lake and its associated Wetlands stand as invaluable assets, contributing significantly to the well-being of the people of Manipur. As the Chairman of Loktak Development Authority, I am keenly aware of the intricate balance required to maintain these ecosystems for the benefit of both nature and humanity” he added.

He also lauded the Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh for his commitment to the conservation of all wetlands and agricultural lands of Manipur.

“Under his guidance, the Lamphelpat Waterbody Rejuvenation Project is in full swing to conserve water bodies in the valley area and to control flash floods. Besides, he has a firm commitment to stop the decreasing number of lakes in the State which was recorded to be around 500 in the 20th Century. The Chief Minister also has a vision of conserving and rejuvenating all wetlands in the State including Loktak, Pumlen, Kharung, Ikop, Waithou etc., among others”, Asnikumar’s message added.
