Kiren Rijiju elevated as union cabinet minister, Arunachal Governor, CM congratulate

Rijiju is Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; and Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the Narendra Modi government. He was Union Minister of State for Home Affairs in the first term of the BJP-led government.

New Delhi: Kiren Rijiju, the BJP’s most recognisable face in the Northeast, was elevated on Wednesday in Team Modi 2.0.

Rijiju is Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports; and Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the Narendra Modi government. He was Union Minister of State for Home Affairs in the first term of the BJP-led government.

Rijiju took oath as a cabinet minister at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of the Prime Minister and senior BJP leaders.

Rijiju became the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports after the BJP-led government returned to office in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Over the past two years, he has been associated with several initiatives in the sports ministry including the Fit India movement.

Rijiju has articulated and worked for the goal that India wins medals at the Olympics in double digits.

He has been actively encouraging the Tokyo Olympics-bound contingent.

After athletes attain qualification for the Olympics, Rijiju has always been the first one to congratulate them.

Many athletes have sought Rijiju’s help on social media for various reasons and the Minister has not declined their request.

While inaugurating the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rijiju had said the country is headed towards becoming a sporting powerhouse.

Known for his political manoeuvre that helped the BJP make inroads into the state which was ruled by the Congress since its inception, Rijiju was born on November 19, 1971, in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. He studied at Delhi’s Hansraj College and also obtained a Law degree from the University of Delhi. He is married to Joram Rina, a graduate from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi.

Kiren Rijiju first contested the 2004 Lok Sabha election from the Arunachal West constituency and won. Although he lost the 2009 Lok Sabha elections by a small margin of 1,314 votes, Rijiju again won the seat in 2014 after which he was accommodated as the Minister of State for Home in the cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kiren Rijiju defeated former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki by a margin of 1,74,843 votes. While he got 63.02 per cent votes, Tuki could get only 14.22 per cent of votes.

Known as one of the most outspoken parliamentarians, Rijiju is also a fitness freak and has widely travelled.

Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) BD Mishra and Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday congratulated Kiren Rijiju on being elevated to Cabinet Minister rank in the Union Cabinet.

The Governor said that the elevation of Rijiju in the Union Cabinet will facilitate in expanding the developmental progress of his constituency as well as of the State.

Complimenting Rijiju, the Governor said, “This speaks volumes for the competent handling by Kiren Rijiju of his ministerial responsibilities and his progressive policies. His managerial and administrative acumen have deservedly been recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji.”

Expressing his gratitude to PM for the elevation of Kiren Rijiju, he said, “This gesture of Modi ji reflects his deep care and concern for the progress of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.”

CM Khandu took to Twitter to extend his best wishes to Rijiju.

“Your elevation to the post of a Union Cabinet Minister brings great joy and pride. My best wishes and hearty congratulations @KirenRijiju ji on being sworn in today. We eagerly look forward to your tremendous zeal, passion and energy in bringing change,” Khandu tweeted.

Mr Rijiju was earlier the Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports and Ayush and Minister of State, Minority Affairs. With agency inputs
