After two decades, Manipur’s MP becomes Union Minister

RK Ranjan Singh was among 43 Ministers who were inducted in the much-awaited union cabinet expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government.

Imphal: Exactly 22 years after then former Lok Sabha MP Thounaojam Chaoba made a Union Minister of State in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1999, Manipur’s inner Parliamentarian Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh has returned as a Union Minister of State in the Narendra Modi-led BJP government on Wednesday.

RK Ranjan Singh was among 43 Ministers who were inducted in the much-awaited union cabinet expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government. He will be Minister of State for External Affairs and Education.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to members of councils at the Darbar Hall in New Delhi.

Born on September 1, 1952 at Kongba Makha Nandeibam Leikai, Imphal East district, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh had won the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 from the Inner Manipur seat. He graduated with an Honours degree from Dhanamanjury College, Imphal under Gauhati University in 1970. He completed his postgraduation in Geography from the Gauhati University in 1972.

After finishing his PhD from the Department of Geography at Gauhati University, he was appointed as an assistant professor at the Department of Earth Science, Manipur University in 1984 and went on to become the Deputy Registrar of the varsity in 1985. He later served as the Registrar from 2004 to 2008.

Singh also served as the director-in-charge of the UGC Academic Staff College and College Development Director of Manipur University till his superannuation in 2012.

After retirement from active service, he took his plunge into electoral politics by joining the BJP in 2013 in BJP.

Singh has served as the chairman of the BJP’s body on the state vision document, party spokesperson, BJP coordinator to the Election Commission and has also been a part of the office modernisation committee.

 Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has congratulated RK Ranjan for being inducted into the Modi ministry.

“Heartiest congratulations to Shri @RanjanRajkuma11ji on taking oath as a Union Minister. Your enormous knowledge & experience in several responsibilities will be of great significance to achieve the vision of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji. My best wishes Yaambung,” the Manipur CM tweeted.
