Bengaluru: Maintaining the early trends, Congress has crossed the half-way mark and is surging ahead of the BJP in the 2023 assembly elections on Saturday.

As at 11.28 am, the Congress is leading in 117 seats and BJP is leading in 70, while JDS is ahead in 29 assembly seats.

Speaking to reporters in Varuna, Congress candidate and former chief minister Siddaramaiah said the party will further improve on its number. “We have secured 120 seats so far. I am expecting the numbers to improve,” he said.

The counting of votes began at 8 am.

For the first time in recent years, Congress is leading in both constituencies of the Kodagu district, and BJP General Secretary CT Ravi is trailing in the Chikmagalur assembly constituency.

BJP turncoat Jagadish Shettar is trailing by over 11,000 votes against BJP candidate Mahesh Tenginkai in Hubballi-Dharwad Central after 8th round of counting. However, another BJP turncoat Laxman Savadi, who is contesting on a Congress ticket, is leading in Athani constituency.

An apparently anxious Congress candidate and former chief minister Siddaramaiah, who is leading in Varuna in Mysuru district, reached the counting centre to monitor the counting process.

The BJP is trailing in five of the seven seats in Shivamogga district, which is a big setback for former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

In the fight between brothers at Soraba in Shivamogga district, younger brother Madhu Bangarappa, the Congress candidate, is marching to victory. His elder brother Kumar Bangarappa, who is BJP candidate and sitting MLA, is trailing by a whopping 20,621 votes.
