Guwahati: The famous Jonbeel Mela (fair) which is known for the preservation of the centuries-old barter system has been canceled this year due to the spike in Covid19 cases in Assam.

The organisers have called for the cancellation of the three day fair which falls on the first weekend of the Magh Bihu celebrations. The fair is organized every year in the Morigaon district of Assam.

However, to keep the tradition alive, around 100-150 people will be allowed to participate in the barter system.

The organizers claimed that the fair is the only event in the country where the barter system is still practised.

The fair attracts people in large numbers from the Tiwa, Karbi, Khasi, Rabha and Jaintia communities living in the border villages of Meghalaya and Assam.
