Historic moment in ‘War against Drugs’, says Manipur CM as Meitei Pangal joins campaign

Around 500 Imams and leaders from different Lilong-based Civil Society Organisations including 350 Imams from different Masjids submitted their support to the Chief Minister Wednesday.

Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has said that the Meitei Pangal community has created a historic moment Monday by declaring unwavering support to the War against Drugs campaign.

Around 500 Imams and leaders from different Lilong-based Civil Society Organisations including 350 Imams from different Masjids submitted their support to the Chief Minister Wednesday.

N. Biren Singh, while addressing a press briefing at the Durbar Hall, Chief Minister’s Secretariat said that the War on Drugs was initiated around June 2018, however, it could not gain much momentum in the initial days. We have witnessed much development and support from various stakeholders, CSOs etc in recent times, he added.

The campaign has garnered much support lately, he asserted, highlighting the voluntary support gained from almost the entire communities of the hill districts in recent times against poppy plantation. This was the beginning of a new chapter in the War against Drugs, he said.

The Chief Minister further assured the opening of a Rehabilitation Centre in Lilong once suitable land is identified and made available.

N. Biren Singh also called for a united fight against drugs and to eradicate illegal drugs from Manipur.

MLA of Lilong AC Mohd Abdul Nasir, MLA of Keirao AC, L. Rameshwor Meetei, along with several Imams and community leaders accompanied the Chief Minister during the press briefing. 

The Imams also read out several resolutions taken during a meeting of Imams against illegal drug abuse, drug trafficking, to urge the Chief Minister to set up a Rehabilitation Centre in Lilong, to organize discussion on war on drugs etc.
