Himanta urges affluent families to voluntarily give up ration cards

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged all affluent families of the state to voluntarily give up their ration cards for the sake of those poor families who genuinely need the benefits of the cards.

In a video recorded message which Sarma shared on his Twitter account, he said that ration cards are specifically meant for weaker sections of the society and the rich people should surrender their ration cards.

“Many families have seen economic prosperity and surrendered their cards to let the needy ones to avail the benefits of the cards.” Sarma said.

Sarma said that the government has undertaken numerous initiatives to improve the condition of the state’s people, particularly those living below the poverty line.

Earlier also State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass urged families with an annual income of more than Rs 1 lakh to surrender their ration cards as such cards are not required for government employees or pensioners.
