GI certificates for Sirarakhong Hathel chilli and Tamenglong orange handed over

Sirarakhong Chilli is known for its deep colouration and unique flavour and Tamenglong orange is popular for its sweetness.

Imphal: Union Minister of State, Trade & Commerce, Som Prakash, Thursday handed over the Geographical Indication (GI) Certificate for Sirarakhong Hathei Chilli and Tamenglong orange to a team led by P. Vaiphei, Additional Chief Secretary, Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur at NEC Secretariat, Shillong during the Northeast Business Roundtable.

The GI for these two crops has been applied by Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA). A total of five GI tags have been handed over for the NE States namely one for Mizoram, one for Sikkim, one for Nagaland and two for Manipur.

The MOMA expressed gratitude to Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, in-charge of the Horticulture & Soil Conservation Department for the strong commitment and clear vision on tapping the huge potentials of horticulture sector and his tremendous support to the officials of the department. 

It can be added that Chief Minister’s new initiatives and innovative projects being taken up in the sector has enabled to get the Geographical Indication Certificate of the two crops. 

Sirarakhong Chilli is known for its deep colouration and unique flavour and Tamenglong orange is popular for its sweetness. It may be mentioned that Tamenglong district is the orange belt of the State producing maximum oranges compared to other districts.
