Imphal: The Central government appointed Sunday a three-member commission to investigate the ongoing sectarian violence in Manipur.
Retired chief justice of Gauhati high court Ajai Lamba-led three member committee will probe the incident and submit the report within six months. The other two members are Himanshu Shekhar, IAS (retd), 1982 and Aloka Prbhakar, IPS (retd), 1986.
A notification signed by Piyush Goyal, Additional Secretary of the Union Home Ministry said that the three-member commission has been constituted on the opinion of government of Manipur, which said that a probe is needed for the public to look into the causes and associated factors of the crisis and the unfortunate incidents happened on May 3, 2023 and afterwards.

The commission will investigate the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities, which took place in the state on May 3 and thereafter, the notification said.
The panel will find out whether there were any lapses or dereliction of duty in this regard on the part of any responsible authorities/individuals. It will see the adequacy of the administrative measures taken to prevent, and to deal with the said violence and riots.
The inquiry by the commission shall also look into the complaints or allegations that may be made before the commission by any individual, or association, in such form and accompanied by such affidavits, as may be specified by the commission.
The headquarters of the commission shall be at Imphal, it added.
