The race for the US Senate is going right down to the wire. At present, Democrats hold 48 seats – while Republicans have 47 with five races left to be called.

Control of Congress hangs on the results of tight senate races in the states of Georgia, Arizona and Nevada – so far yet to be called, the BBC reported.

Democrat Maggie Hassan has fended off a tough challenge for her senate seat in New Hampshire while Republican JD Vance has won in Ohio.

It is expected the Republicans will likely take control of the House of Representatives, according to race projections as per the BBC report.

The loss by the Democrats of either the House or the Senate will enable the Republicans to block President Joe Biden’s agenda.

In the high-profile contests for governors’ seats, Republican Brian Kemp has defeated Democrat Stacy Abrams in Georgia and Republican Ron DeSantis has won in Florida, the BBC said.

Representative Kevin McCarthy, who has been backed by former US President Donald Trump for Speaker, has given a statement saying that Republicans will take control of the House of Representatives.

His party, he said, would “get America back on track”. “Let me tell you, you’re out late, but when you wake up tomorrow, we will be in the majority and Nancy Pelosi will be in the minority,” McCarthy said.

The vote for speaker is an internal process and only House members cast a vote. The current speaker of the House is Democrat Pelosi.

Final results are not yet in.
