Curfew extended, 9 COVID-19 fatalities, 497 infections in Meghalaya

Health services, including emergency services and vaccination, have been exempted from the purview of the curfew order.

Shillong: Nine deaths related to COVID-19 complicacy took the toll up to 652 and 497 cases of new infection tallied to 5797 active positive cases in Meghalaya on Saturday, even as 801 more recoveries from the viral infection added up to 31, 781 recovered cases in the State, which has registered 38, 230 confirmed cases till date.

Meanwhile, in view of the “continuous large numbers of COVID-19 cases” being detected in East Khasi Hills District, and hospital bed occupancy nearing saturation, the District Magistrate, Isawanda Laloo on Saturday extended the ongoing curfew in the District from 5 am of the June 7 to 5 am of June 14 under section 144 Cr. P.C. read together with Regulation 3 of the Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases, COVID–19 Regulations, 2020.

Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said COVID-19 related deaths included seven in East Khasi Hills district and one each in Ri- Bhoi district and West Jaintia Hills district .

Of the new COVID-19 cases, he said 204 were in East Khasi Hills district, 102 in West Garo Hills district, 49 in Ri-Bhoi district, 36 in South West Garo Hills district, 34 in West Jaintia Hills district, 24 in South West Khasi Hills district, 17 in East Garo Hills district, 13 in East Jaintia Hills district, eight in West Khasi Hills district and five each in South Garo Hills district and North Garo Hills district.

“Inter-district movement of persons is not permitted. No person is to step out without valid reasons. Vehicles plying without passes will be liable for strict penalties. Any one in defiance of orders is liable for arrest,” the district magistrate warned.

Opening of essential shops would be regulated as per office order and in-situ construction works for Government and private projects that do not involve movement of labour are permitted, with due permission from the office of the deputy commissioner, East Khasi Hills district.

“Political, public, social and religious gatherings including conferences, meetings and trainings, weddings and sporting activities are not permitted,” the order specified.

Only Central Government offices as notified by Home (Political) Department and State Government offices as notified by Personnel and A.R (A) Department are permitted to open, at “limited strength”.
