Cruise service between Karaikal and Sri Lanka to start after nodding from EAM

Puducherry: Lt.Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday said that cruise service between Karaikal and Sri Lanka will be commenced after getting approval from the External Affairs Ministry.

Talking to newspersons after flagging off an ocean Expedition of the National Cadets Corps (NCC) at the Thengaithittu harbour here, Dr Soundararajan said she participated in a function relating to “Chandrayaan” in Sriharikota on Monday ” and today participating in “Samundrayan”.

This is an expedition to teach youths how to face challenges, she said this could be treated as a prelude to a sea voyage of the people.

The Lt Governor said, In Telangana, people could travel from Nageswaram to Srisailam in the river to worship at a temple.

The expedition of the NCC would be a prelude for people travelling in boats /ships from Puducherry to Karaikal to develop tourism.

She said the cruise service between Karaikal and Sri Lanka was there already. But, it was stopped and steps are being taken to resume it and Sri Lankan Minister and High Commissioner held talks in this regard.

Certain permission has to be obtained from the External Affairs Ministry and thereafter the cruise service would be resumed, she added.

Stating that she could not say anything about the Local Body election since the matter is subjudice, Dr Soundararajan said that her desire is that the election should be held from October 21.

More children will be affected by Dengue fever than Covid, the Lt Governor said that all steps are being taken to prevent the spread of Dengue fever here and there is no need for the people to be panicked.

The government is all prepared to face the North-East monsoon and to prevent the spread of diseases.

Priority is being accorded for infrastructure development, she said and added that funds were allocated under the Smart City project.

Sixty cadets, including 25 girls are taking part in the expedition under Lt. Commander Ravishankar.

A Naval officer, two NCC officers, six naval training officers and 27 other officials are accompanying the team from Puducherry to Karaikal.

After passing through Cuddalore, Parangipettai and Tharangambadi, the team will reach Karaikal and return in the same route here on October 15. They will be covering 302 kilometers in 11 days.
