Imphal: The 165 Infantry Battalion (TA) (H&H) Assam, under the Assam Rifles, solemnly commemorated the historic 85th Raising Day of the Assam Regiment with a poignant wreath-laying ceremony at the Assam Regiment War Memorial located at Babupara Traffic Point in Imphal, Imphal West district. Raised on 15 June 1941 at Shillong in East Khasi Hills district under Lieutenant Colonel Ross Howman, the regiment has spent eight and a half decades drawing troops from the diverse ethnic communities of the North East, forging an enviable reputation for unique valour.
The solemn proceedings seamlessly transitioned from profound remembrance to a celebration of shared heritage, culminating in a traditional Barakhana reception. Major General Gaurav Sharma, SC, SM, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) graced the occasion alongside senior military dignitaries and 52 veterans with their families, bringing the total attendance to over 450 participants. This grand Barakhana served as a vital platform where senior officials, veterans, troops and their families interacted closely, fostering an atmosphere of deep bonhomie and vibrant celebration on this historic raising day. By paying homage to the gallant soldiers and celebrating together, the event successfully reinforced the timeless bonds of camaraderie across generations. From the battlefields of the Second World War to the conflicts of 1947–48, 1962, 1965, 1971 and the Kargil war, the legendary ‘Rhinos’ continue to stand resilient. The day’s activities perfectly epitomised the spirit of their regimental motto, ‘Assam Vikram’ (Unique Valour), and their famous salutation, ‘Tagra Raho’, leaving an indelible impact of strength and patriotism.
