Lucknow: Hours before the commencement of the special session of the House 17th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) workers held protests over several issues, including the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and inflation.

The special session was called to hold the election of the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly.

However, Congress has announced to boycott the session demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Ajay Mishra Teni over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Congress leader Aradhana Mishra said the ruling party is conducting the election of the deputy speaker of the state assembly post bypassing parliamentary traditions.

She said, “There was no consultation with the Opposition regarding the election of the Deputy Speaker and the convening of the session of the Legislative Assembly.

“Besides, it would have been better if the government had discussed the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in the House.”

The Congress has seven members in the assembly, out of which two have become rebels.

Before the commencement of the Assembly session, Congress MLAs staged a protest near Chaudhary Charan Singh’s statue in the Vidhan Bhavan and demanded a discussion on the Lakhimpur incident in the House.

While Congress party workers staged their protest in the Vidhan Bhavan courtyard, the SP workers took to the streets.

SP leaders were protesting against inflation. They said, there is no justification for this special session.

Meanwhile, rebel SP leaders MLA Nitin Agarwal and Narendra Singh Verma have filed their nominations for the post of Deputy Speaker.

During the special Assembly, the House will also make an obituary reference on the death of ex-UP CM Kalyan Singh.
