Guwahati: The Opposition Congress launched an all-out offensive attack against the ruling BJP led government in Assam over the clash that broke out at Sipajhar in Assam’s Darrang on Thursday that led to the death of at least 2 people in police firing and injured several policemen.

Nine police personnel also sustained injuries in the clash who are now admitted to the Guwahati Medical College.

Earlier on Friday, Assam Congress also submitted a memorandum to Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and demanded an all-party meeting along with stakeholders should be immediately called to strategize and plan a rehabilitation and compensation program for the people of the area affected by the eviction drive.

The party also demanded immediate suspension of the district commissioner and superintendent of police of Darrang district.

Ripun Bora, Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Assam demanded an immediate transfer of the DC and SP of Darrang district for a ‘transparent’ inquiry into the clash.

Mr Bora, while demanding the transfer of the DC and SP of Darrang district, emphasised on fact that the SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma was the brother of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, which might jeopardize the inquiry process.

“We demand the immediate transfer of the DC & SP of Darrang District for transparency in the enquiry,” Ripun Bora said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress MP and deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi said: “The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s own brother is the Superintendent Police of the Darrang district where the barbaric violence took place. It is clear that this CM-SP duo did not want a peaceful resolution to the eviction drive. The CM continues to bring shame to Assam.”

Congress workers also staged protests in front of the district commissioner’s office in Darang district on Friday.
