Colombo: Sri Lanka is now in a serious crisis due to the actions of the former Rajapaksa regime, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has said.

She said not only the Rajapaksas but the government representatives around them, their friends and associates are also to be blamed for the current crisis, media reports said on Tuesday.

“Those who ruled the country after 2005 thought they own the country and its assets and that they can act in any manner they want. They thought they can get away with any and every dirty work they do. If anyone raised objections they were killed,” she said.

The former President said the only way forward was for those who want to work for Sri Lanka to join hands irrespective of party differences and introduce a new system.

Kumaratunga made the remarks while attending the opening of an office of the New Lanka Freedom Party at Battaramulla.

The Nawa Lanka Freedom Party is led by MP Kumara Welgama.
