Buenos Aires: Veteran defender Marcelo has urged Argentina national team boss Lionel Scaloni to include in-form striker German Cano in his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil.
The comments came after Cano continued his rich vein of scoring form with the first goal in Fluminense’s 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores final last Saturday.
“Cano in Argentina’s national team! Is it obvious? He deserves it,” former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo wrote of his current Fluminense teammate.
Cano has never played for the Albiceleste despite a prolific career for clubs such as Pachuca, Independiente de Medellin, Vasco da Gama and Fluminense.
His first-half strike at the Maracana stadium on Saturday was Cano’s 13th goal in 12 Copa Libertadores outings this season.
Overall, the 35-year-old has netted 37 times in 55 appearances for the Tricolor Carioca in 2023.
Argentina currently lead the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with four wins from as many outings.
The reigning world champions will host Uruguay in Buenos Aires on November 16 before a clash with Brazil in Rio de Janeiro five days later.
