New Delhi: CAA and NRC are a domestic matter of India, Bangladesh Information and Broadcasting Minister Hasan Mahmud said on Tuesday.

The minister, who is on a four-day visit to India, refused to comment on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register for Citizens (NRC). Asked about it, he said: “It is a domestic matter for India”.

The CAA provides fast track citizenship to eligible Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The NRC is a register of all Indian citizens. So far the exercise has only been carried out in Assam. Several Indian leaders had said the exercise was undertaken to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

India had however assured Bangladesh that the exercise will not have any impact on Dhaka.

Mahmud is on a four-day tour to India, during which he inaugurated the Bngabandhu Media Center at Press Club of India on Monday.

On Tuesday he met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.
