Imphal: In a move to foster scientific curiosity and academic excellence among the youth, Assam Rifles hosted Dr Ronaldo Laishram, an internationally acclaimed astrophysicist from Manipur and Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, at Pallel Garrison in the Chandel district on 31 May 2026.
Dr Laishram recently earned global recognition for leading an international research team in identifying the “Loktak Protocluster,” a massive galactic structure dating back 12.6 billion years to the early universe. Named after the iconic Loktak Lake in the Bishnupur district, this discovery underscores the growing contribution of Northeast India to global scientific research.
The day’s activities commenced with Dr Laishram visiting the Assam Rifles Community Radio Station to record a special podcast aimed at promoting scientific awareness and innovation. During the session, he shared his inspiring journey from Khangabok village in the Thoubal district to the forefront of global astrophysics. Following the recording, he engaged with 35 personnel from the force to discuss the importance of continuous learning and professional dedication.
The visit concluded with an interactive session with students of Assam Rifles Public School, Pallel. Dr Laishram fielded enthusiastic queries on space exploration and emerging technology, encouraging students to pursue careers in science and innovation. The podcast featuring this distinguished scientist will be available on the “Highway Radio” app on 05 June 2026. This initiative reflects the commitment of Assam Rifles to empower the youth through meaningful engagement with intellectual role models.
