Chandel: In a proactive move to promote a healthy and tobacco-free lifestyle, Assam Rifles organised comprehensive awareness programmes at Sehlon, Kovang and Chakpikarong Villages in the Chandel district on 31 May 2026. This initiative marked the observance of World No Tobacco Day, which this year focuses on the theme “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference,” highlighting the critical need to shield youth from predatory marketing and harmful addictive substances.

The day’s activities began at Sehlon and Kovang villages, where medical personnel conducted a specialized health session and a medical camp for approximately 200 villagers. The Medical Officer of the force provided detailed insights into the adverse impact of tobacco consumption on physical and mental well-being, followed by the distribution of essential medicines and health counselling.

Subsequently, the focus shifted to the Oriental Children Home in Chakpikarong, where 45 participants, including 40 students and 5 teachers, engaged in an interactive session. The team sensitised the young attendees on the severe health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco use, urging them to act as ambassadors of change within their families. The programme concluded with a collective pledge by 245 participants to shun tobacco products and foster a disciplined, drug-free society. This outreach reinforces the unwavering commitment of Assam Rifles towards the holistic development and public health welfare of remote communities in Manipur.
