Guwahati: A total of 190 cadres of the United Gorkha Peoples Organisation (UGPO) on Thursday surrendered with their arms before Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a surrender ceremony organised by the state government, the cadres deposited 27 Arms including automatic and foreign-made weapons 200 Grenades, huge quantities of ammunition and a massive quantity of IEDs and explosives.
The UGPO was raised in 2007 with a stated objective to safeguard and voice the interests of the Gorkha Community in Assam through “revolution and extremism”.
Assam Police and Military Intelligence Unit of Gajraj Corps Tezpur worked in tandem to motivate the cadres to shun violence, lay down arms and return to the mainstream.
In recent times, the Assam government has also started peace parleys with the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent).
