Chandel: Fulfilling a vital civic action mandate aimed at sustainable environmental protection, Assam Rifles partnered with local state bodies, law enforcement and educational bodies to execute targeted ecological drives in parts of Manipur. The initiatives seamlessly aligned with the national theme of Van Mahotsav, India’s annual “Festival of Trees,” and the central government’s afforestation campaign, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0,” which seeks to amplify forest cover, nurture ecological stability and inspire communities towards environmental stewardship.

The collective environmental campaign kicked off at Sugnu, Kakching District on 05 July 2026. Organised in coordination with the Forest Department, the green initiative integrated security forces, six Forest Department functionaries, two Sugnu Police representatives and nearly 30 local civilians, including youth and women from various civil society organisations. Together, this combined multi-agency contingent successfully planted approximately 80 ecological saplings, utilising the platform to nurture collaborative civil-military relationships and deepen mutual trust within the local community.

The afforestation drive expanded further on 06 July 2026 with an academic and youth-focused initiative held at L Thingamphai High School in Chandel District. Executed in coordination with the Chandel Forest Department and bolstered by organisational support from Students’ Organisations, the event channelled the enthusiastic energy of 40 young school students. To enrich the impact of the activity, Forest Department experts educated the young participants on the overarching importance of biodiversity, the role of trees in combating climate change and methods for preserving nature.

The students enthusiastically planted 112 saplings across the school premises and adjacent areas, formalising their commitment by taking an environmental pledge to care for and nurture the young trees. To support the educational welfare of the children in this remote region and motivate them in their academic pursuits, Assam Rifles distributed essential stationery items to the young participants. This environmental campaign earned immense appreciation from the school administration, local community elders and student organisations, reinforcing the enduring partnership between Assam Rifles and the people of Manipur.
