Imphal: In a move that has resonated deeply across the Lilong–Urup region, the Assam Rifles recently reached out to honour Tampakmayum Asatullah, a man whose name has become synonymous with humanitarian service in Manipur. Known affectionately as “Esing Maiba” or the Water Healer, Asatullah has dedicated decades to the grim yet vital task of recovering drowned persons from the state’s turbulent waterways, single-handedly retrieving over 480 individuals to provide closure to grieving families. His specialized skills are frequently sought by the State Disaster Response Force, most recently evidenced by his successful recovery of the sacred Ibudhou Nongshaba Hiyang Hiren boat from the river depths near Lilong Chajing.
To acknowledge this extraordinary contribution, a group of fifteen personnel from the Assam Rifles visited his residence in Kairao Bitra to present a financial grant and essential provisions as a token of societal respect. This interaction fostered a significant collaborative dialogue, during which Asatullah and his expert team pledged to work alongside the forces during the challenging monsoon seasons. In the current socio-political landscape of Manipur, such gestures serve as a vital bridge, reinforcing mutual trust and highlighting the profound impact of local heroes who work silently for the safety of the populace.
