Chandel: Assam Rifles organised a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Battalion War Memorial in Sehlon, Chandel district to honour the supreme sacrifice of Captain Allahnoor Kathat, Kirti Chakra (Posthumous), who displayed unwavering courage and dedication to duty against overwhelming odds. On 03 July 1967, Captain Kathat was leading a counter-insurgency operation in the Sialsuk area of Sateek in Aizawl district, Mizoram, following specific information regarding hiding Mizo National Front (MNF) cadres.
During the search operation, the security forces were ambushed by MNF insurgents. The team immediately opened retaliatory fire under the brave leadership of Captain Kathat, successfully neutralising one insurgent, injuring another and recovering a huge cache of arms and ammunition. Disregarding his personal safety, Captain Kathat bravely neutralised the threat and ensured the safety of his own troops. He was wounded during the fierce operation and made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty before medical aid reach the remote location.
To commemorate his legacy, the senior officials laid a wreath and narrated the story of the braveheart to infuse a sense of pride and honour. A total of 127 personnel of the Battalion paid rich tributes by laying wreaths and honouring the martyr with a grand Guard of Honour.
