After Assembly resolution, Tamil Nadu Guv gives assent to Bill banning online gambling

According to Article 200 of the Constitution, the Governor has no other option, but to give his assent to a Bill passed by the State Assembly for the second time.

Chennai: A couple of hours after the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution moved by Chief Minister MK.Stalin against Governor R.N.Ravi over the delay in giving his assent for the Bills, the Governor finally accorded his assent for the Bill banning online gambling in the State.

The Governor’s assent game after Stalin moved the resolutioin insisting the Centre and President Droupay Murmu to immediately issue appropriate instructions to Governor R.N. Ravi, to give his assent to the Bills passed by the Assembly, within a specific period.

With the pressure mounting on him, Ravi finally gave his nod following which it was expected to become an Act after it was notified in the Government Gazette.

According to Article 200 of the Constitution, the Governor has no other option, but to give his assent to a Bill passed by the State Assembly for the second time.

It may be recalled that after a gap of 141 days, Ravi had returned the  Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online  Games Bill, 2022 on March six questioning the competence of the State Assembly to enact such a Legislation.

This evoked strong criticisms from the ruling DMK and its allies.
