Guwahati: Assam government’s decision to withdraw the Assamese language paper in the Assam Civil Services examination has met with stiff opposition from students organizations and political parties.
The influential All Assam Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has demanded the immediate withdrawal of the decision.
Sankar Jyoti Baruah, General Secretary of the AASU said by removing the Assamese language the safeguard and rights of people who love Assamese or have completed their education in Assamese medium has been put at risk.
He termed the decision taken by the ruling BJP government as very “unfortunate”. “As the language has now been removed, people who are not from Assam and cannot speak any local language can be qualified by just knowing Hindi. This can never be accepted”, Mr Baruah added.
The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday announced that language paper and English will not be mandatory in the written examination from now onwards for the Assam Civil Service aspirants.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has said that the decision was to impose an RSS agenda to impose Hindi across the country.
“ Before they imposed CAA on people of Assam and now on the instructions from RSS headquarter Nagpur the ruling BJP government is hell bent on destroying the culture, language and tradition of Assamese people,” Ankita Dutta, President of Assam Youth Congress said.
