As part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan initiative, the Office of Legal Metrology, Jiribam District organized an awareness program today for the general public and shopkeepers at Jiribam Bazaar, Kalinagar, and Pangan Tabi (Babupara).
The awareness programme aimed to spread awareness about the proper usage of C.I. weights and electronic weighing machines, ensuring exact weights and measurements for the general public, and educating them on consumer rights under the Legal Metrology Act of 2009.
During the campaign, shopkeepers were shown demonstrations on how to use verified and stamped weights and measures properly. These demonstrations emphasized keeping cast iron (C.I.) weights clean and rust-free, as well as placing them on a level surface. Shopkeepers were also told that electronic weighing machines must be switched on five minutes before use, should display zero before weighing, and require annual verification. Finally, the campaign highlighted that no weighing should ever be conducted using defective machines or loose weights.
During the programme, consumers were advised to check for a zero reading before making a purchase, verify the shop’s seal or verification certificate, insist on receiving the exact weight, and report any short-weight delivery to the Legal Metrology Office.
