Imphal: The Governor of Manipur, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh extended their greetings to the people of Manipur on the occasion of ‘Nupi Lal’ Day, observed annually on December 12.

In his message, Governor Acharya highlighted that “Nupi Lal Numit” serves as a tribute to the courage, sacrifices, and patriotism of Manipuri women. “It is a fitting occasion to remember the brave women of Manipur who stood against the oppressive economic and administrative policies of the Manipur Maharaja and the British Government in 1939. I urge the people of Manipur to draw inspiration from these valiant mothers, who fought against injustice to create a prosperous and peaceful state,” he stated.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, in his message, described Nupi Lal as a series of protests and boycotts led by courageous Manipuri women against British imperialists. The protests were aimed at halting rice exports that had caused an artificial famine in the state.

“Today’s women of Manipur have inherited the courage and patriotism of those fearless mothers,” the Chief Minister said. “They continue to play a pivotal role in social movements and lead efforts to maintain the social fabric. Many women from the state now hold key positions in government and private institutions, making significant contributions to nation-building,” he added.

On this occasion, Chief Minister Biren Singh called for inspiration from the brave mothers of Nupi Lal to counter threats and preserve peace, unity, and integrity among Manipur’s diverse communities.
