One govt, one Tax: Nagaland CSOs against illegal taxations

Kohima: A Core Committee comprising various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) including tribal bodies will be formed to take concrete actions against illegal taxation, extortion and other activities in the entire Dimapur town.

A release issued by the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) informed that a resolution to this effect was adopted during a consultative meeting initiated by the NCD with Dimapur-based CSOs, tribal Hohos and some other unions on Wednesday, where the NCD President Etsungmomo Kikon highlighted that the agenda was to implement the public resolution of ‘One Government One Tax’ which was adopted on October 31, 2013 and reaffirmed in the November 30 meeting.

It asserted that the resolution should be implemented through community participation ‘as public pressure is mounting day by day and may burst out at any time if no remedial measures are taken immediately.’

He said that complaints about extortion and multiple taxation are on the increase post-pandemic and underscored that citizens should take ownership of the city and safeguard it too.

The release further said after deliberations, the meeting resolved to reaffirm ‘One Government One Tax’ as the public has had enough of “illegal taxation, extortion, syndicate by individuals and groups, Government agencies” and it would not be remained as the mute spectators.

Stating that concrete action would be undertaken with appropriate authorities and resolved to form and empower a Core Committee for the task.

The members of the Committee would include members of the Vigilance Committee, NCD, Presidents and Chairpersons of Dimapur-based tribal Hohos and unions and representatives of various CSOs like DCCF, Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation, Dimapur District Gaon Burhas’ Association, Dimapur Naga Students’ Union, Naga Women Hoho of Dimapur, Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Business Association of Nagaland, EDBA, non-Naga communities and representatives of the Village Councils, the release said.
