Agartala: Leader of the opposition Manik Sarkar on Tuesday wrote to Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb urging him to remove officer-in-charge (OC) of P R Bari police station of South Tripura district for the cop’s alleged hobnobbing with miscreants who lynched a CPI-M worker last week.
The former state Chief Minister also demanded that a high-power team be constituted for an impartial investigation into the murder of the Communist Party of India-Marxist worker Benu Biswas (48) at Kamalpur village on Feb 10.
Alleging that the murder was ‘politically motivated” and carried out by “BJP goons” of the same village under Rajnagar assembly constituency of Belonia sub-division, Sarkar said the officer Arjan Chakma had not registered even a “proper” case of murder and instead was trying to pass it off as suicide and directly shielding the accused persons.
Demanding enhanced security for Benu’s survivors, as they have been getting “fresh threat of murder” after the incident, Sarkar called upon the Chief Minister to extend support for livelihood of the victim’s family. Sarkar, a CPI-M politburo member, said a seven-member CPI-M MLA team led by him visited the victim’s family members on Monday and got the detailed accounts, which clearly indicated that the police have not been doing enough to book the culprits. In fact, police “inaction” has spread fear among the villagers.
“In four years of BJP-IPFT government as many as 24 CPI (M) workers including Biswas were killed by BJP miscreants but in none of the cases did the police carry out a proper investigation, and none of the culprits were arrested,” Sarkar alleged.Â
