Imphal: The Indian Army is gearing up to mark the 62nd Walong Day with a series of grand events, paying tribute to the remarkable courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought valiantly in the 1962 Battle of Walong during the Sino-Indian War.
The commemorations will commence on October 17, 2024, with a solemn opening ceremony and wreath-laying at the Walong War Memorial, a hallowed site honouring the brave souls who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
This year’s Walong Day will be both a remembrance of the past and a celebration of the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army. The month-long events have been meticulously planned to honour the fallen, engage local communities, and promote nation-building. Highlights include battlefield treks, a car rally, medical and veterinary camps, adventure hikes, cycling and motorcycle expeditions, and a Half Marathon culminating in Walong. Each event symbolizes the Army’s unyielding commitment to keeping alive the memory of the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Battle of Walong remains a testament to the unparalleled bravery, resilience, and dedication of the Indian Army. Despite facing severe logistical challenges in the unforgiving terrain of Arunachal Pradesh, the soldiers of 6 KUMAON, 4 SIKH, 2/8 Gorkha Rifles, 3/3 Gorkha Rifles, and 4 DOGRA fought with unmatched valor, making the enemy pay dearly for every inch of ground. Their courage in the face of overwhelming odds is forever etched in Indian military history.
