Shimla:Accusing Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government of indulging in anti-people decisions like previous BJP government, State Unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) demanded immediate withdrawal of hike in electricity, water and garbage (collection) charges.

In a Press statement issued here on Saturday, State secretary of CPI (M) Dr Onkar Shad strongly condemned the increase in electricity and water rates by the state government and demanded its roll back immediately.

Dr Shad said that instead of fulfilling its election promise of 300 units of free electricity Sukhu government has decided to increase the electricity charges by 22 to 46 paise per unit from this month. “Party warned the government that if it does not immediately rolls back this decision then we would mobilize the public and start a movement against it.”

He said the government has already hiked charges on the drinking water by 10 percent. State government has increased the rates of diesel by Rs. three per litre in the month of January. “Due to the policies of the central government, the public is already suffering from inflation. Now increase in the rates of basic necessities like electricity and water by the state government will increase the inflation further and put more economic burden on the public,” he said.

Party also said that government has decided to increase the fee for garbage collection to Rs 117 per month from Rs 97. Party said that during CPI (M) local self government in Shimla garbage charges were only Rs 40 per month in the year 2017 which has increased by 200 percent in last five years. Party said that continued hike in inflation made the life of poor people miserable.
