“War on Drugs”: Manipur CM incinerates drugs of 314 kg

Imphal: Chief Minister N. Biren Singh incinerated confiscated illegal drugs weighing a total of 314.471 kgs today. The incineration was conducted during the Drugs Disposal programme held at Shija Common Bio- Medical Waste Treatment Facility, Lamdeng. The programme was organized by the Manipur Police Department, Government of Manipur.

Addressing the function, the Chief Minister stated that after the formation of BJP government, the War on Drugs campaign was started to combat drug menace in the State. Youth of the North East states have been affected by drugs and the problem of drug abuse has also extended to the mainland cities of the country.

He added the government had been conducting the disposal of drugs regularly totaling to six times with today’s disposal.

The government has been facing lots of resistance, criticism and continuous challenges in its fight against drugs. He, however, informed that the government will continue its “War on Drugs” campaign by overcoming all the hurdles, he added.

He continued that the unprecedented crisis in the state is one of the outcomes of the government’s War on Drugs campaign.

Biren Singh cited that the destruction drive against poppy plantations has been carried out extensively in various districts of the State.

The Chief Minister appreciated the collective efforts extended by the State Police Force, Central Reserve Police Forces, Border Security Forces, Forest department officials, Army, Assam Rifles among others in the poppy destruction drive.

The Chief Minister asserted that a two-way mechanism will be adopted which includes  seizure of drugs on one hand and dealing with the drug addicts with sympathy by providing shelter in rehabilitation centers to make them able to stay away from drugs and live a drug free life on the other.

N. Biren Singh cited that the number of drug addicts has gone down in the State. The government had already sanctioned around Rs.5 crores for construction of a rehabilitation centre in Ukhrul district, he said.

Biren Singh appealed to the public for cooperation and support to combat the drug issues in the State.  

The types of drugs and quantity disposed today were heroin powder of 9.884 kg, Brown Sugar of 244.409 kg, WY tablet of 26.239 kg, SP capsule of 661 grams, N-10 tablet of 493 grams, Pseudoephedrine tablet of 505 grams, Ganja of 32.280 kg accumulating to total weight of 314.471 kg.

The programme was attended by Forest Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, IPR Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan, CAF and PD Minister Leishangthem Sushindro Meitei, Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo Singh, Education Minister Thounaojam Basantakumar Singh, MLA of Lamlai AC Khongbantabam Ibomcha Singh, MLA of Lamsang AC Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh, Director General Police Rajiv Singh, Administrative Secretaries and high ranking police officials among others.
