Imphal: Journalism is the fourth pillar of democracy, and the primary responsibility of journalists is to guide the public on the right path, said Rinku Khumukcham, Editor of Imphal Times.

He stated this during the 13th Devarshi Narad Jayanti celebration held on Sunday. The programme was organized by Vishwa Samvad Kendra Manipur at Bhaskara Prabha, Konjeng Leikai, Imphal West.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Khumukcham emphasized that journalists must report news objectively and prioritize public interest over personal considerations.

“Journalists should set aside their personal interests while reporting and work for the welfare of the people. News dissemination driven by personal motives can negatively affect society and the public,” he said.

Highlighting the relevance of Devarshi Narad’s contributions, Khumukcham noted that journalists should learn from the values and communication practices associated with Narad, particularly in promoting peace and social harmony. He further stated that working journalists should continuously develop diverse skills to better serve society.

Senior writer Kakchingtabam Brajamani Sharma, who attended the event as a special guest, described Narad Muni as the world’s first journalist. He explained that Narad’s role in carrying information across the three realms—Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld—reflects the essence of journalism and communication.

Addressing the gathering, A. Brajakumar Sharma, President of Vishwa Samvad Kendra Manipur, said journalists have a significant responsibility in educating the public and shaping informed public opinion through the dissemination of accurate and reliable information.

The event was attended by around 250 working journalists and members of the public from across Manipur.
