UN chief expresses concerns over Sri Lanka’s crisis

New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday expressed concerns over the current situation in Sri Lanka and said it is important to address the root causes of the conflict and protestors’ grievances.
The UN chief tweeted that he continues to follow the situation in Sri Lanka very closely.

He said: “It is important that the root causes of the conflict and protestors’ grievances are addressed.”

He also urged all party leaders of Sri Lanka to “embrace the spirit of compromise for a peaceful and democratic transition.”

Gotabaya Rajapaksa, whose President’s House was taken over on July 9 by anti-government protesters and remains in their possession, had pledged to resign from the post of Presidency on Wednesday. He is yet to give his resignation but has declared Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the acting President.

The Sri Lankans blamed the President’s administration for the country’s worst economic crisis.
