Agartala: The AICC Secretary and Congress party in charge of Tripura Szarita Laitphlang and senior Congress leader of the state Ashis Kumar Saha were attacked on Agartala-Udaipur National Highway on Tuesday allegedly by BJP miscreants on broad daylight.

Police said two vehicles of the leaders were vandalized on the road in close proximity to the office of Sepahijala District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police at Bishramganj. However, nobody has been arrested yet.

Police have registered an FIR based on the specific complaints against 12 BJP workers and claimed that an investigation was launched.

Ashis Saha alleged that a group of around 20-22 people came out from the BJP party office with sticks and rods and vandalized their vehicles standing on the road when both of them went to attend a meeting of the Sepahijala district leaders in the Congress office.

“They abused Congress party and threatened us and our party workers in the locality of dire consequences if they (local Congressmen) were found with Congress. The whole incident happened in presence of some policemen who were on general duty in the market but the police were mum until we spoke to Director General of Police,” Saha alleged.

Meanwhile, Szarita told the media that the miscreants were assembled in the BJP office for a long time and attempted to launch an attack in the party meeting of Congress and said, “Our programme was duly intimated to police. The style of attack and the attitude of the miscreants raising Jai Sri Ram from BJP party office showed they were instructed from the top level and it was known to police.”

Szarita alleged, “Tripura government is failing to provide security to the people and giving space for the opposition parties. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha had assured our parliamentary team that his government would take steps against the criminals who have been doing such criminal activities but as of now none was arrested.”

She reiterated that Dr Saha had assured the Congress parliamentary delegation led by the leader of the opposition in Loksabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhury two weeks ago that his government will take all efforts to end political violence in the state and legal action would be taken against the criminal involved in the attacks on Congress Bhawan at Agartala as well as murderous attack on Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman but nothing has been done.

“The ruling party goons vandalized the opposition party offices, houses of the opposition supporters and workers and terrorised the situation even after winning three out of four assembly by-elections. Unless the violence is stopped and oppositions would not give due space in the democratic process, Congress will not sit idle,” she warned.
