Agartala: The opposition CPI-M on Tuesday demanded the Election Commission of India (ECI) take immediate action against the ruling BJP candidate in the Boxanagar by-election, Tofazzal Hossain, for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by openly holding a meeting with the government employees seeking votes for him.

The CPI-M State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury wrote a letter to Tripura CEO Puneet Agarwal alleging that Hossain held a meeting with the All Tripura Madrasa Teachers Association (ATMTA) on Sunday at Kamalnagar in his constituency. While seeking votes, he allured the employees with some promises and advocated the BJP as a secular party, he alleged.

“These Madrasa teachers are purely government employees, many of whom are drafted for election duty. For the fairness of the election, these government employees cannot be mobilised for election campaigns by any party. But the BJP, being an incumbent in Tripura, is so dauntless that it feels proud of flouting election codes,” Chaudhury stated.

Meanwhile, calling upon the voters to defeat the BJP in the Dhanpur and Boxanagar by-polls, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Tuesday urged the people to vote against the BJP for the greater interest of the country. He urged the anti-left people who left the Congress party to join the BJP in their desperate bid to oust the 25-year-long left-front rule to return to the old party.

“The Congress Party is like your mother. You will get peace, love, and respect here. Don’t stay in a party that is responsible for the demolition of the democratic and secular fabric of this country. As sons and daughters of this party, we shouldn’t be angry at our parents for long”, he stated in a felicitation programme organised by the Pradesh Congress after he became a permanent invitee member of the Congress Working Committee.

The BJP has been trying hard to destabilise the fundamental principles of India, and they introduced a bill to reform the judicial system by weakening the powers of the Chief Justice of India. The people who made no contribution to the freedom struggle are now launching campaigns like Har Ghar Tiranga just to entice people to vote.
