Tripura Autonomous District Council poll on April 4

Agartala: The state election commission Wednesday announced to hold election to 28 –members of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) on April 4 next and counting will be held on April 8, said state election commissioner M L Dey.

He said that to hold the election peacefully, the state government would seek deployment of central security forces considering the situation along with the state police and existing paramilitary forces. As many as 8,65,041 electorates including 4,28,490 female votes will exercise their franchise across 1244 polling booths.

About 7000 polling officials along with 17 observers have been deployed to conduct the elections; Dey said, adding that the model code of conduct in the ADC areas has come into force immediately after the announcement of the poll schedule.

In January this year, a division bench of high court of Tripura headed by Chief Justice Akil K Kureshi directed the state government to hold election to ADC and to form a new council by May 17 next while disposing off two public interest litigations seeking immediate poll.

The election was scheduled in May last year but due to Covid-19 pandemic, the state had to impose governor’s rule for six month. Meantime, ECI has allowed different states and democratic institutions to hold elections but Covid situation of Tripura was not convincing, which had compelled the state to extend the governor’s rule till May 17.
