Agartala: Three days ahead of the visit of its national president J P Nadda, the ruling BJP in Tripura received a jolt as leader of the opposition in the state’s Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) Hangsha Kumar Tripura deserted BJP and joined TIPRA.

Royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) runs the ADC.

Hangsha crossed over to Pradyot’s party with as many as 6000 followers from Karamcherra and Chowmanu tribal reserved assembly constituencies in Dhalai district on Tuesday, accusing the BJP of indulging in “sectarian politics”.

He also alleged that “massive corruption” from “top to bottom” in the BJP-ruled state has pulled down the pace of development.

“In the name of Sab Ka Saath Sab Ka Vikas (with all, development for all), BJP has been bluffing the people. They are sincerely working for the welfare of only their leaders, MLAs, and Ministers.

“They misguided the innocent people of Tripura with tall promises before the last assembly poll and everything turned into a nightmare – instead of progress, in several indicators, Tripura is in a declining phase,” said Hangsha.

He accused the BJP leaders of “conspiring against each other” for pursuing their “individual agenda”.

Violence and vendetta have become a part and parcel of the saffron party, with which people of Tripura were not familiar earlier, he alleged.

There was no development of the indigenous population of the state and under BJP’s rule tribals and marginalized sections in the state were pushed to poverty, he claimed.

“For a long, we have been requesting the leaders to turn their attention to development but they didn’t. So, I have no other alternative except to join the Maharaja’s call of Thansa (unity). I was in BJP for a long time and won last year’s ADC poll as a BJP nominee. But I ut now I realise, they
only use us for their vote bank not the development of indigenous people,” Hangsha complained.

Addressing the joining programme at Manikpur village in the Dhalai district, TIPRA Chairman Pradyot Kishore Iterated that some political leaders – after finding no other way to prevent erosion in their parties – resorted to a “false communal campaign” against him and his outfit, which has now boomeranged on them.

“TIPRA Motha is not a party exclusively for tribals or any religion. It is a platform for all the communities who are indigenous to Tripura. We are not against the Bengali community. They (BJP) are doing politics by dividing the people based on religion, caste, and community, but our politics is for the unity and development of Tripura,” Pradyot clarified.

He claimed that TIPRA would be a dominant force in the 2023 assembly elections to oust BJP from power in Tripura, as people have realized the BJP’s modus operandi in four and half years.

“Hundreds of people would join TIPRA before the next elections,” he added.
