Sudden surge in COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya

Shillong: A sudden surge in the number of daily COVID-19 count in Meghalaya with 71 new cases reported on Wednesday shot the number of active cases up to 356, while 12 more cases of recovery from the viral infection surged the number of recovered cases to 82,541, health officials said.

The state has so far registered 84364 confirmed COVID-19 cases, which includes 1467 cases of fatality, according to the official report.
Of the new COVID-19 positive cases detected today, the highest number of 66 was in the East Khasi Hills, which, including state capital Shillong is the most pandemic-hit district with 272 active cases, health officials said.

The highest number of 39 COVID-19 positive cases was reported from the Little Flower School, Malki, Shillong on Wednesday. Also, two COVID-19 positive cases each were reported from the West Khasi Hills district and West Garo Hills district and one from the East Garo Hills district on Sunday.

The numbers of active COVID-19 cases in the other districts of the state have been comparatively low with 21 in East Garo Hills, 19 in West Khasi Hills, 18 in West Garo Hills, 13 in Ri-Bhoi, 10 in West Jaintia Hills and three in East Jaintia Hills, while there were no active cases in
the North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills.

Meanwhile, of the 11,98,927 persons tested for Covid-19 in the state till Wednesday, 11,45,563 persons were tested negative for the virus, health officials said.

On the other hand, 32,090 health care workers have received the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 and 28,765have been administered with the second dose, 96,971 front-line workers have
got the first jab and 82,452 have taken the second shot, 10,23,576 persons from among the general public have been inoculated with the first dose and 6,71,652 citizens have been fully vaccinated with
the second dose across the state as on date, health officials said.
