Aizawl: A meeting of State Level Sub-Committee On Green Mizoram was convened Tuesday via video conferencing under the chairmanship of Pu TJ Lalnuntluanga, Minister Environment, Forests & Climate Change who is also the Chairman of the Committee.

Pu TJ Lalnuntluanga noted that this year the dry spell lasted longer than usual and Mizoram suffered devastating forest fires which made it more imperative to accord importance to planting of trees, especially ensuring the survival of planted saplings.

He further said that the effects of deforestation are being felt with water sources drying up and increased incidences of forest fires. He pointed increasing green cover is one of the key ways to combat climate change. The Department has prepared tall seedlings to be planted this year to ensure increased survival, he added.

He also expressed gratitude to NGOs and the public who joined hands with the field staff of the Department in combating the recent forest fires.

With the pandemic still raging, planting of trees under Green Mizoram will be undertaken by District Level Committees within their jurisdiction ensuring adherence to all COVID appropriate behaviour and protocols, the meeting decided.
