St. Joseph’s school Laitkor celebrates centenary

Shillong: St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Laitkor, East Khasi Hills, celebrated its Centenary Year (1926–2026) with a programme held to honour and felicitate its teachers, former teachers and past pupils.

The programme was graced by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui as Chief Guest, in the presence of A.L. Hek, MLA, Fr. Francis Kharpran, Teachers, Former Teachers, Parents and Students. The programme also featured student performances and reflections on the school’s century long journey and contribution to education.

Addressing the gathering, Lahkmen Rymbui emphasised that education is not merely a means to secure a government job but a tool to face life’s challenges and become self reliant. He also highlighted the importance of recognising and developing individual talents alongside formal education.

The Minister spoke about the Government of Meghalaya’s initiatives to provide young people with opportunities to develop skills and encouraged students to explore their talents, while recognising that no work is inferior or superior. He also urged teachers to continuously update and retrain themselves in view of the changing world and advancements in technology.

Speaking as Guest of Honour, A.L. Hek praised the founders of the institution for bringing the light of education to Laitkor and he also encouraged students to work hard, remain resilient in the face of challenges and understand their own strengths and potential.

The centenary celebration marked a significant milestone in the history of St. Joseph’s Secondary School, honouring its past while inspiring the present generation to carry forward its legacy of education and service.
