Shillong: The scenic and evergreen parks dotting this hill State capital of Meghalaya, which have remained closed for months on end since last year due to the punishing pandemic, are all set to re-open along with cinema halls from August 23, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong
announced after a review meeting on the COVID-19 situation held Thursday.
Popular public parks like Lady Hydari Park, Wards Lake, Elephant Falls will be allowed to open from Monday, strictly for vaccinated adults above 18 years of age only, he underscored.
The State government has also decided to allow all sports activities from next week, he said, adding that cinema halls, Jackpot parlours would re-open with 1/3 capacity from Monday onwards. Private transport will also be allowed with 1/3 capacity throughout the state from August 23.
“However, these activities will be strictly subjected to the SOPs to be issued by the government through the respective deputy commissioners,” he said. Tynsong further informed that the government was likely to take a call on re-opening of schools next week.
“We will again sit down to discuss reopening of schools, maybe for class XI and XII next week,” Tynsong said, adding that the government would also deliberate on the need to re-open the tourism sector in the State.
Meanwhile, 329 new COVID-19 cases added up to 3,421 active cases, five deaths, all that of patients who were not vaccinated increased the fatality figure to 1,257, even as 308 more recoveries surged the number of recovered cases to 68,307 on Thursday in Meghalaya, which
has registered 72,985!confirmed cases so far.
