Washington: The US on Wednesday urged its citizens in Ukraine to depart immediately amid reports of Americans being singled out and detained by the Russian military.

According to the US embassy in Ukraine, “US citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately if it is safe to do so using any commercial or other privately available ground transportation options.”

It also urged the American citizens in Ukraine to exercise increased caution due to the potential for active combat, crime, and civil unrest. It said, “US citizens should not travel to Ukraine due to the active armed conflict and the singling out of US citizens in Ukraine by Russian government security officials.

“There are continued reports of US citizens being singled out and detained by the Russian military in Ukraine and when evacuating by land through Russia-occupied territory or to Russia or Belarus.”

It comes amid calls for bringing back basketball star Brittney Griner, who has been in Russian jail for more than a month.

She was accused of carrying vape cartridges containing hash oil in her luggage, Daily Mail reported. The Russian officials have extended her detention until May 19 while they investigate the charges.
