Over 75 percent votes cast in Sikkim Panchayat polls

Gangtok: Over 75 percent of voters exercised their rights in the partyless Sikkim panchayat elections on Thursday, with the authorities claiming the polls were “peaceful”.

According to the provisional figures released by the State Election Commission, altogether 75.52 percent votes were polled.

Altogether there were 3600342 enrolled voters -181693 males and 178649 females – stated TN Bhutia, Secretary, SEC.

Voting for the polls, aimed at electing partyless independent candidates, started at 8 AM and ended at 5 PM in most of the booths across rural areas of Sikkim.

There are 1147 Gram Panchayat wards, out of which polling was conducted in 695 wards as 448 candidates returned victorious uncontested.

The remaining four wards will go for repoll at a later date.

Out f 122 Zilla territories, polling was held in 102 Zilla territories. 19 candidates have been elected uncontested, while repoll is in the offing in one seat due to demise of the candidate.

Counting will be carried out on November 12.
