Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has refused to put a stay on the Assam government’s decision to ban the Internet when examinations are held on Sunday.

Hearing a writ petition, Justice Suman Shyam said on Friday that the petitioner failed to make a prima facie case in the matter.

The petition was filed by social activist Raju Prasad Sarma.

The move was necessitated to ensure free and fair examination, given the history of question papers getting leaked through WhatsApp or social media, the authorities said.

The Assam government had suspended mobile Internet services in 24 of the state’s 35 districts “in the interest of holding free, fair and transparent recruitment examination(s)”.

The Internet services are to be blocked from 10 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 4 pm on August 28.
