Kohima: The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) on Friday urged the Nagaland Government to resolve the issue of multiple taxations by the government agencies and Naga National Political Groups (NNPG).

In a memorandum submitted to the Nagaland Chief Secretary, the CNCCI said that multiple taxations and the various taxes imposed by government agencies and the NNPGs (underground groups), including the Municipal Council and Town Council in the form of item tax have burdened the business community, making it difficult to engage in any meaningful business activities.

The CNCCI expressed anguish that despite the issue being flagged to the government on many occasions, the government seems in no mood to address the issue with seriousness. It therefore demanded that the government immediately address the issue of multiple taxation.

The CNCCI meanwhile reminded that the item tax or fee collected on items that come under the GST regime by various municipal and town councils should be immediately stopped, as GST has subsumed all other taxes under ‘One Nation One Tax.’ It further demanded that various other taxes levied at various gates by government agencies and departments which fall under GST regime should be immediately stopped.

The CNCCI also called for the immediate implementation of the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act and reserved nominee representation on civic bodies. It acknowledged the government for tabling the SARFAESI Act in the last winter Assembly session and forming a committee.

The CNCCI however expressed disappointment that the Act was not passed during the Monsoon Session of the Nagaland Assembly. It stated that banks have stopped giving fresh loans or fresh enhancement even on cadastral land despite the Government’s order dated May 12 this year. It demanded that a Special Assembly Session be called and the SARFAESI Act be implemented immediately, the memorandum said.
